Shatter Me (Shatter Me #1) by Tahereh Mafi

I'm shattered, ya'll.

It's been a while since I was really pulled into a YA series, but I think I've finally found the right series to do it! This weekend was Fall Break for work/school and so I was off for FOUR DAYS in a row. It was amazing. So, of course, I had to catch up on some reading.

Now, my plan was to take this stack of 4 YA books I'd been meaning to read for months and read the first chapter of each. Then, decide which book I wanted to continue. It has been a while since I read YA now (maybe since this summer?) so I wasn't sure what I was in the mood for. The first book I picked up was Shatter Me. You guys, I read the first 100 pages in a single sitting and was like, "I don't even need the rest of this stack!" Over the weekend I finished Shatter Me (and Destroy Me, a novella set after Shatter Me), and it was amazing.

Check out my non-spoilery review below!

Cover thoughts: I like the cover, but I don't know that I would've picked this up on my own. Honestly, I think the only reason I bought this book was due to the bookstagram buzz about this series. I just had to know what it was about!

1. Characters: The main character is sooo interesting to me! I love her voice and her train of slightly crazy thoughts. She has a feisty-ness to her and a bit of an attitude but not to the extent that she is portrayed the same as every other YA female protagonist. The male characters, oh man. I don't even know where to begin! They're awesome! They're each completely different from one another and they each have a little surprise throughout the novel. I won't ruin it for you with more details, but just trust me. You want to get to know them.

2. Story: This story is dystopian, so of course it has the typical "Adults bad. Teenagers good." vibe or even "Rebels good. Government bad." However, I think this one is unique enough that it stands apart from others in this genre and has additional layers that similar series don't have.

3. Author's Writing Style: Wow. Tahereh Mafi has a totally unique style. (I feel like I keep using the word unique, but it's true!) It took me a few chapters to get used to, but I stuck it out because I was so captivated by it. You simply must see for yourself. I would definitely read more by this author, as far as this series goes and anything else she puts out!

4. Overall Rating: 4 Stars. I gave this book 4/5 stars because it engaged me, but it wasn't until the second half or last third of the book that I really was like," OMG OMG, I can't put this down..." And I generally reserve the 5 star rating for ones I absolutely could not put down from start to finish. I have a strong feeling the next installments will be 5 stars now that I'm used to the author's style and the world-building is more established.

5. Similar Reading: Check out these other series if you're interested in other YA series like this one! Click the covers to visit their respective Goodreads pages and add them to your t-b-r!

BOOK TOUR!! Steal Away Home by Billy Coffey

It's time!! I am honored to be a part of TLC's book tour for Steal Away Home by Billy Coffey. Published by Thomas Nelson, Steal Away Home is a newly released work of Christian fiction that is told through the eyes of minor league baseball player Owen Cross. As Owen is offered his first big time shot, he reflects back on the journey that led him there. I can truly say several things about this book: The language used and writing style overall is breathtaking. It's poetic. The characters are well-developed and dynamic. The story unfolds in a way that creates tension and mystery. By the end of Steal Away Home , I was dying to see how the flashbacks of Owen's life leading up to the big game would connect to his present state and how far the story would go beyond the game.  Did I mention the cover? 😍 Take a look again, and click the image below to read the full synopsis on Goodreads! Don't forget to add it to your to-read shelf. Steal Away ...
